The Mount, Edith Wharton Home | Kylie & Andrew | As seen on RuffledBlog
An intimate, destination wedding with 16 close family members? Kylie and Andrew handed me a planner’s dream. Seriously, this is the type of event that I stay up late at night fantasizing about! Small intimate gatherings allow you to create a more personalized experience for each guest.
I absolutely loved getting to work on the planning and design for this couple. Their wedding at The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts was everything I hoped for and more!
Kylie and Andrew wanted their wedding to be a weekend getaway for the whole family. So finding a venue was our first step. Kylie and Andrew wanted their venue to be east of the Mississippi, have some historical significance, and manicured gardens. We looked at 14 venues in total from New York to Florida before narrowing it down to two in Massachusetts.
Kylie and Andrew visited both and fell in love with The Mount. And who wouldn’t? The Mount is the historic home of Edith Wharton. An accomplished and famous writer (the first female to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction), Edith Wharton and her husband purchased 113 acres in Lenox in 1901 and set to work building her dream estate. A passionate writer, designer, gardener, and hostess, The Mount was a true reflection of Edith Wharton and still is to this day. The books in the library are from Edith’s personal collection and her bedroom is decorated much as it would have been when she lived there. The estate is absolutely breathtaking and was the perfect background for Kylie and Andrew’s wedding.
The elegant European styled gardens and historic mansion of The Mount were the inspiration for much of our design. Our jewel-toned color palette was balanced with golds, soft greys, and plenty of greenery. The invitation suite was full of custom details. Delicate florals were hand painted by the artist Design House of Moira on handmade paper and tucked inside a folio that served as a keepsake for the guest. A gold tassel and oversized wax seal with their new family crest completed the suite.
The ceremony took place in a garden facing a fountain. Kylie made the long walk from the house through the tree-lined lime walk to meet Andrew. After the ceremony guests moved to cocktail hour in the historic living room of the mansion and finished with dinner (my personal favorite) outside under a canopy of flowers and the night sky. It felt like something right out of a fairy tale.
Since the guest list was so small, we were able to do things you wouldn’t when planning for a large crowd. One of Kylie and Andrew’s favorite dates was at The Melting Pot and they really wanted to recreate that moment by serving fondue for dinner. With the help of the chef and catering team at The Marketplace, we were able to deliver a delicious 3-course fondue dinner!
The table was set with a soft, overflowing runner, antique brass candlesticks, and clusters of flowers. Each seat had a formal place setting complete with ornate chargers and menu which matched the details of the invitation suite. In every chair, we placed a blanket so guests could keep warm as the sun started to set. Dinner felt warm and intimate, exactly what we were going for!
Some of my favorite memories are sitting around the table with a small group of people I love. There is just something about gathering with good food and good wine - conversation comes easy, laughs happen often, memories are created. That was Kylie and Andrew’s wedding day in a nutshell. I love a big reception, but the intimacy of their day allowed them to create a unique and special experience for each of their guests.
