Editorial shoots can be a ton of work, but they are a great opportunity to try new things and get creative. That is exactly what I did with our gypsophila editorial shoot at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Speed Art Museum is a beautiful venue. With high ceilings and tons of windows, it has a lot of open space and natural light. It was the elegant venue we needed for our gypsophila inspired shoot.

What is gypsophila? Gypsophila is the scientific name for baby’s breath. Most everyone is familiar with this flower because is regularly used for filler in affordable arrangements and bouquets. Typically it is more of a supporting character, but for our shoot, I wanted to give it a starring role. There is so much beauty in the things we take for granted. I love that we were able to elevate this often overlooked flower and give it a more modern take.

Playing with the gypsophila theme, I wanted to keep our color palette neutral - whites, creams, greys, and blacks. I love adding pops of colors to designs and I’m not afraid of a bold color palette. But I also know there is so much beauty in the absence of color. Just like baby’s breath, neutrals tend to be overlooked. But in our design, they got to shine.

A small warning, if you don’t do neutrals right it can come off feeling a little flat. To avoid this, you will want to play with various shades and tones of neutrals and layer with texture and patterns. All of these elements come together for a huge impact. Your eye as a guest or viewer takes into account the layers of texture and it provides a variety of visual interest. If you have your heart set on a neutral wedding, don’t be deterred. With the right approach, the results can be stunning, just be open to various tones and textures!

I love to use editorial shoots to try out different approaches. There are a lot of great spaces for a ceremony at the Speed Museum. We set ours up in front of the stunning floor to ceiling windows. We surrounded our bride and groom models with some baby’s breath for a gorgeous result.

We also did two different table designs to highlight how our inspiration can be interpreted in different ways. Some brides might prefer a formal set up while others prefer something more minimal. Don’t be afraid to adjust and change things to suit your style and budget.

This editorial shoot was an exercise in creativity. And there is no better way to be inspired than being surrounded by the beautiful works of art at the Speed Museum. We were able to take two things that can sometimes be overlooked - baby’s breath and neutrals - and made them shine.
