What do you get when you take an empty hayfield, a hot Ohio summer, and a creative dream team? Jenna and Shawn’s perfect tropical, boho tent wedding at Derby Lane Estates.

When I say this was a massive build-out for our team, I mean it was a MASSIVE build-out. In total, it took us 10 days to go from an empty field to this dreamy tent reception. But this is what we live for at SJE! When you start from scratch, it opens up so many possibilities for creativity in production. Of course, pulling all this off requires a lot of coordination. There are so many moving pieces! Luckily, we have tons of experience with multi-day buildouts and the end result is worth every ounce of effort.

Jenna and Shawn were such a fun couple to work with. They met freshman year of high school and have been together for nine years! They have so much history together, we wanted to incorporate that into their wedding design. They love spending time on the beach (it’s actually where Shawn proposed) and that laidback, tropical vibe inspired their wedding day.

We created a color palette of muted green, blush, rosewood, peach, and sandy tan. Wicker and wood accents helped create that beachy feeling. And we are absolutely obsessed with the draping and light fixtures we choose for the tent. It totally transformed the space! The diamond shaped dance floor was another team favorite of this design. Just a unique detail that added so much interest.

Jenna and Shawn’s wedding day started at the University of Dayton Chapel. They both graduate from UD and the chapel is absolutely gorgeous, so that was an easy choice for their ceremony. Then we headed to Derby Lane Estates for cocktails on the back lawn. Next, guests headed down to the tent where they were greeted by drinks and a comfy lounge for relaxing.

You might have heard of a champagne wall at weddings, but how about a margarita wall? Jenna and Shawn love sipping on spicy margs at their game nights with friends and a Mexican feast is one of Jenna’s favorite meals, so we decided to incorporate that into their design. It was also a great call back to their rehearsal dinner where we opted for a more casual dinner of tacos.

I can’t emphasize it enough, your wedding day should reflect you! Don’t be afraid to let your story shine. Take inspiration from Pinterest or events you love, but look for the ways to make it your own.
